Mousemats, mouse mats and computer mice
We are always in a quandary here as to what to call a mousemat. Mouse pad seems to be the term favoured by our continental cousins. Mouse mat and mousemat figure prominently on the UK web sites. The Shorter Oxford Dictionary, published 1983, makes no mention of a mouse in connection with computer related subjects. There are all sorts of arcane definitions of a mouse such as ‘”a kind of ball or knob, wrought on the collars of stays by means of spun-yarn, to prevent the running eye slipping” but of a computer mouse there is no mention. Perhaps we should buy a more up to date dictionary!
